Dear Parents,

Welcome Back to School! I hope everyone has had a fun relaxing summer with lots of time spent together as a family!

Our theme for Denton Creek this year is “Dream Beyond the Stars.” Denton Creek is a school of Innovation that understands that all children are creative! Learning is individualized and provides learners opportunities to practice critical thinking and creativity in multiple settings while allowing everyone to explore interests and areas of strengths. We will have many opportunities this year for our learners to share how they are using their creativity! Follow us on Twitter (@DCEtrailblazers) as one way to see what’s going on at DCE!

Please help me in welcoming our new staff members to the DCE Family!

Claire Jeffers will be joining our 2nd Grade team. Claire was born and raised in Katy, Texas and attended Texas A&M (can I get a whoop?) while receiving a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She is recently married and her husband is currently in Physical Therapy school. Claire loves to travel and spend time with friends and family. She is very excited about her first year of teaching and being a new member of the DCE family!

Also joining our 2nd Grade team is Michelle Solomon. Michelle is from Washington, D.C. and has just recently moved to Dallas. She graduated from Baylor University with both her bachelors and master’s degree. (can I get a sic’em bears?) Michelle received her master’s in Math Curriculum. She loves to travel, especially to Africa! Michelle just returned from a trip to Ethiopia where she had the opportunity to teach at an orphanage. She is very excited about her first year as a teacher!

Joining our 3rd Grade team is Collett Skaggs. Collett is a native Texan and attended CISD schools K-12! For both her undergraduate and graduate studies, she attended Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. Collett has her Masters of Education in Reading and this will be her first year teaching. She loves to travel and spend time with family and friends.

Joining our 3rd grade team in Dual Language is Sissy Shephard. Sissy was born and raised in Brazil and has lived in the United States for the past 32 years. She graduated from UNT with a BS in Studies in Aging and worked in that field for 20 years before going back to school to obtain her Bilingual/ESL Teaching Certificate. Sissy has been teaching for 10 years and believes that teaching is her true calling in life. She has two children, Michael 26 years old and Vanessa 22. Sadly, her son passed away unexpectedly 9 months ago. She loves to travel and just got back from Cancún where she taught English for 4 weeks at a local high school.

Joining our Dual Language program in 4th grade is Jennifer Taylor. Jennifer just completed her 11th year of teaching. She is a graduate from the University of South Florida with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She and her husband have been married for 12 years and are native Floridians, but they love Texas and have been here the past 8 years! They have two daughters, 5 years and 14 months old and their oldest will attend DCE! In Jennifer’s spare time she enjoys traveling, cooking, sewing, gardening, teaching preschool Sunday school, and physical fitness activities.

Also joining our Dual Language program in 4th grade is Otilia Garza. Otilia was born and raised in Mexico. She graduated from the University of Texas at Brownsville. After graduation, Otilia lived in Mexico where she taught learners how to speak English. She believes in ensuring a successful and safe bilingual and bicultural learning environment for all her learners. Otilia loves to listen to music, watch movies, and spend time with her husband and family.

Joining our 5th Grade Team is Shelby May. Shelby grew up in Canton, TX and received her undergrad from Baylor in Elementary Education with a specialization in Gifted and Talented. Shelby has her master’s in Educational Leadership from Dallas Baptist University. Shelby is engaged to be married this December! She loves to cook/bake and travel. Even though this is her first year to teach, it is not her first year at DCE! Shelby was our campus math interventionist last year. We are glad to have her as a part of the DCE family officially!

Crystal Shepherd-Holmes will be our new special education teacher. She attended Jarvis Christian College while working on her Bachelors of Science in Special Education and Capella University to complete her Master of Special Education. This will be Crystal’s 11th year in education. Crystal’s husband is a high school football coach. She and her husband are the proud parents of two young boys who are mini-football fanatics (ages 5 and 7) and she is also the proud stepmom to two girls (10 and 12) and a 20 year old boy who is at Texas A&M on a full football scholarship this year! (go #23 Sabian Holmes!!)

In planning for the upcoming year, here is some information about important events that will help get you and your child ready for the new school year!

August 14th Verification Day from 8:00am-12:00pm and then 1:00-3:00pm

All items are part of the registration process and must be completed before receiving your child’s class assignment:

*July or August Utility Bill:  gas, water or electric

*Update Portal Account

*Student Residency Questionnaire— this form can be found at:

             http://www.coppellisd.com/cms/lib07/TX01000550/Centricity/domain/1189/2014_15/SRQ%20form%20for%20Homeless%20Identification.pdf

Don’t stand in line!!! You are encouraged to email the needed documents listed above to: dentoncreekregistration@g.coppellisd.com  If you email your documents you do not need to come in on August 14th!

You can drop off utility bills and the completed Student Residency questionnaire to the office, any time before August 18th!

You might be asking, since the district Verification Day is a week earlier this year, how will you find out your child’s teacher? Good question! If all documents have been received and immunizations are all in order, your child will receive a letter from their teacher! Have your child watch the mailbox the 19th or 20th! So be sure to get all of your Verification documentation in before the 18th!

Don’t forget to make sure you verify your information on PTO Connect so you will continue to receive the regular updates about school activities from our PTO!

Here is the link to the PTO Connect Form http://www.coppellisd.com/cms/lib07/TX01000550/Centricity/Domain/1189/DCE PTO Connect verification form for back to school 2013.pdf

Meet the Teacher! -August 21st from 5:00pm-6:00pm You and your child/children are invited to come meet their teacher(s) and see the classroom(s). PTO will have a station set up in case you need help connecting to PTO Connect, are in need of a Trail Pass, or wanting to buy DCE spirit wear from 5:30 – 7:00

First Day of School!! -August 25th from 7:50am-3:05pm- This will be the first day for students. The tardy bell rings at 7:50am each morning.  Students should be in the classroom when the bell rings before 7:50.  We encourage parents to get their children to school between 7:30 and 7:45.

(There is no supervision prior to that time and doors are not unlocked until 7:30)

You may walk with your child to the classroom on the first day.  After that, students will be lining up in the gym, grades Kinder-5th grade. Students will wait there and the teachers will come and pick them up at 7:40am.

We ask that parents do not walk their child down to the classroom after the first day, because we are establishing our routines for the year as well as trying to make the most of our instructional learning time each day.  Thank you!

August 26th, 27th, 28th K-2 students will be released at 11:50am.  We will have these days as early release days for our Kinder, First and Second graders for beginning of the year assessments.  If you are a parent of a K-2nd grader and are unable to pick up your child and bring them back up to the school at their assigned testing time, we will provide activities for the students while they are waiting for their testing. If your child stays at school on these days, please plan on picking up your child in at the regular dismissal time of 3:05pm.

Curriculum Night -September 4th from 5:30-6:30pm K-2nd and 6:30-7:30pm 3-5th

This is a night for parents to come hear about the curriculum being covered during the school year and get information on class procedures.  Please make arrangements for your children to stay at home on this evening. More information about this evening will come home from teachers when the year begins.

We are looking forward to an exceptional school year full of learning, laughter and love at Denton Creek as we “Dream Beyond the Stars”!

Sincerely,
