The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires that a state identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities residing in the state.
The definition was amended in 1997 to include children with disabilities who attend private schools and then expanded in 1999 to include “highly mobile” children with disabilities, such as migrant and homeless children. It also includes homeless children or wards of the state.
Child Find even applies to children suspected of having a disability who are advancing from grade to grade.
Who is eligible for services?
A full and individual initial evaluation must be completed to determine if the child has a disability as defined by IDEA and to determine in more detail what his or her special needs may be.
Who can begin the process?
Parent/Guardian; Doctor; Teacher; Private School Teacher/Director; and/or Family Member
