Seeking Input on 2018-2019 Calendar Options

  • The District Educational Improvement Council (DEIC) Calendar Subcommittee has worked to review requirements, long-held traditions and input from district stakeholders to develop two calendar options for the 2018-2019 school year.  Details to consider when reviewing the two options are:

Option 1

    • Similar to the 2017-2018 calendar
    • School begins Monday, August 20, 2018
    • School ends May 30, 2019, which is after Memorial Day in May, but before June 1st

Option 2

    • School begins Wednesday, August 15, 2018
    • This mid-week start optimizes student acclimation, especially in lower grades
    • School year ends Thursday, May 23, 2018, which is prior to Memorial Day
    • Closer alignment of the number of days in first and second semesters
    • Aligns with many surrounding districts, which have proposed and/or approved earlier start dates

Additional Information on Both Options 1&2

    • Have the required 187 work days for teachers
    • Have greater than 75,600 minutes (required by the state of Texas) of instruction for students
    • Include 3 flex days
    • Include 2 bad weather days
    • Have the same winter and spring breaks
    • Include professional learning dates throughout the year to provide ”just in time” support for teachers
    • Utilize the District of Innovation option to start before the 4th Monday in August
    • End the first semester, including exams,  prior to winter break

Note: The CISD Board of Trustees will approve a calendar for 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 at its meeting January 22, 2018. The option selected for 2018-2019 will be duplicated for 2019-2020.
