At New Tech High@Coppell we are committed to designing opportunities for our learners to experience real world learning in as many ways as possible. One of our graduation requirements is to complete 10 hours of Job Shadowing during their Junior year and 15 hours of an Internship during their Senior year in order to gain perspective about careers they are interested in.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on social contact during this time, we have developed an alternative to complete this requirement. Learners will be required to attend “Try It On For Size” career exploration workshop sessions on Zoom and complete reflections on their learning.
“Try it On For Size” is a speaker series comprised of professionals in various career fields who will share their real-world experiences in their area of expertise with learners. We encourage learners to “try on” several career choices so they can make informed decisions about their future plans.
“Try it On For Size” sessions will be held on Flex Fridays from 1:30 - 2:30 pm. Learners will be required to attend at least three sessions of their choice and complete reflections in our Schoology Internship course.
If your learner was unable to complete their Job Shadowing last year, they will be required to attend two additional sessions and complete reflections on them, for a total of five sessions this academic year.
Learners need to sign up for these sessions through SCHED, during the week of the session.
Our first session will be on Friday, October 2. The speaker will be Matt Connell, the VP of Financial Services at Las Colinas Federal Credit Union. If learners are interested in Finance, Banking, Investments, Sales, etc. this will be a good session to attend. Watch for a flyer with all the details coming soon!
If you have any questions, please let me know. If your learner has an opportunity to complete a traditional internship in person or virtually instead of attending these sessions, have them email me or come talk to me in the Media Center. I will show them what to do to complete the paperwork. Looking forward to an insightful series of valuable discussions!
