Coppell ISD Ranked #1

"Remember the rating fiasco of last school year? Here's another example of why the state's accountability rating system is flawed," said Dr. Jeff Turner, Superintendent of Coppell schools, in a recent address to staff. Turner added, "Upon examining the percentage of students passing ALL TESTS TAKEN, CISD ranks NUMBER ONE of ALL Texas districts with student populations over 10,000." This award was achieved using the very same data that rated CISD 'ACCEPTABLE' in August of 2005 (TAKS/ SDAA II scores from spring 2005), and Turner is predicting that, after the hard work and efforts of last year coupled with the outstanding performance of students on the spring 2006 TAKS tests, the hold on the number one spot this year will be even stronger. The state's current accountability rating system has been criticized for penalizing large and/or diverse districts in favor of small, more homogenous districts. Dr. Turner is working alongside colleagues and the state to develop a fair system of accountability which will more accurately depict overall student performance.

CISD Modifies Early Release Times

In light of the recent and tragic accident involving a Coppell High School student, administrators have been reviewing the school district's dismissal procedures and will continue to work with the City of Coppell to find ways to make the school district's dismissals as safe as possible. Beginning with the Wednesday, November 8th in-service day, middle school students will be released at 2:00 p.m., and CHS students will be released at 2:30 p.m. Since this is not an issue with the elementary students, the early release time for elementary schools will remain at 11:30 a.m. (Click on the CISD website link listed in the Tel-E-Gram for the complete early release article.)

Bond Projects Underway

Upon the successful passage of a $50 million bond campaign in May 2006, the Coppell Independent School District sold $26,960,000 in late June to Piper Jaffray. Work then commenced on several projects identified in Phase I of the campaign and continues this fall:

Technology network infrastructure improvements including replacement computers, network drops, battery backup system, network equipment upgrade, instructional software and hardware

New curriculum management system

Coppell Middle School East's trophy case glass replaced with safety glass

Austin Elementary's wooden playground equipment replaced

Cafeteria/Kitchen flooring at Town Center Elementary replaced

Valley Ranch Elementary received a sidewalk extension at the service exit

New camera surveillance equipment will be installed at CMS-East and CMS-North and additional cameras will be added at CMS-West beginning in late November. Bid specifications are currently out for several additional Phase I projects including sound system improvements for the auditorium at CHS, as well as HVAC, roof, turf, and gym floor replacements and fire alarm upgrades at various campuses. Renovations of some existing science classrooms as well as the conversion of two classrooms for science use at CMS-East are set for summer 2007. More specifications for Phase I projects will go out in November and December. (Click on the CISD website link for more bond information.)
