Mr. Gerry Miller
Director of Bands, Coppell ISD
Mr. Miller is in his first year as Director of Bands at Coppell HS. Prior to joining CISD, Mr. Miller served as Wakeland’s first Director of Bands and Fine Arts Department Chair. Under his direction, the Wakeland HS Wind Symphony was a four-time TMEA State Honor Band Finalist and performed at the 2011 Music for All National Concert Band Festival. The Marching Band was a four-time UIL State Marching Band Contest Finalist. The ensemble is a six-time finalist and three-time Class Medalist at Bands of America Regional Championships.
Additionally, the Wakeland Band had numerous soloists and ensembles that earn 1st Division Ratings at UIL Region Solo and Ensemble Contest each year, with the majority continuing on to UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest. Since its inception, the Wakeland Wind Symphony has earned the UIL Sweepstakes Award for receiving overall 1st Division (Superior) Ratings in Marching, Concert, and Sightreading Contests (2007-2015). In 2008, Mr. Miller was awarded the prestigious UIL Sponsor Excellence Award.
Mr. Miller is in his tenth year on the staff of DCI’s 10-time World Champion Drum Corps – The Cadets.
Mr. Miller is the TMEA Area B Band Chair, having served as the Region 24 Band Chair for the past 6 years. He is the Coordinator of Music Distribution for the TMEA All-State Audition process, seating students in ensembles on Wednesday evenings at the TMEA Clinic/Convention. He has also served as the coordinator for the TMEA 6A All-State Symphonic Band, the 5A All-State Symphonic Band, as well as a member of the Agenda Committee for TMEA.
Mr. Miller received his Bachelors of Music Education at Loyola University - New Orleans where he served as President of the Loyola University Collegiate Music Education Chapter, President of the Loyola University Bands, and Student Coordinator for the Dean's Student Advisory Council. His primary teachers include Dr. Joseph G. Hebert and Col. John R. Bourgeois (conducting), Prof. Sue Loegering (bassoon), and Prof. John Reeks (clarinet). He is in the process of completing his Masters of Music Education.
Mr. Miller and his wife Lori live in Frisco,Texas. Lori is the Director of Youth Activities at St. Gabriel Catholic Community in McKinney. Their 15-year-old son Gerry is a sophomore tuba player at Wakeland HS. Their 9-year-old son Benjamin is a third-grader at Fisher Elementary School.
