    April 25, 2008

At 6:15 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2008, Coppell Police Officers were dispatched to a private residence to investigate a missing persons report. As this investigation was taking place, a jogger called 911 to report a woman in distress at the Lee Elementary campus at approximately 6:43 a.m. Upon arrival, police determined that the woman, later identified as 2007 graduate of Coppell High School and former Lee Elementary student eighteen year old Emily Christina Coker, was deceased.

Coppell ISD officials were immediately contacted and arrived on the scene shortly after 7:00 a.m. Parents and students arriving on campus to attend a Spirit Assembly were notified that an incident occurred on school grounds and that although their children were not in danger they were welcome to take them home for the day. Lee staff and parent volunteers immediately began contacting the remaining parents, and with over 400 students on the campus, all but 65 were picked up before 10 a.m. All others were picked up by 12:30 p.m. and staff was released shortly afterwards.

Police and District officials met with the Lee staff and a preliminary statement was posted to both the Lee Elementary website and the District home page. An off-site staging area was established in the parking lot of St. Ann’s Catholic Church for police and school district officials to address questions from the media.

Although limited information has been received by the District, CISD was also informed of an additional student death that occurred this morning. Nineteen year old Travis Masters, a freshman at Oklahoma State University and a 2007 graduate of Coppell High School, was killed in a collision while driving on Highway 121 in Grapevine.

The entire Coppell Independent School District expresses its condolences to the families of both former students. Grief counselors are available and will remain on-call across the District to meet the needs of students, staff members, and the CISD community. As additional information is received, it will be posted in the News Section as well as in the announcements area of the campus websites.
