Board Selects GPA Option
During the December 13, 2010 meeting of the Board of Trustees, the members voted to approve the new Dual Calculated Grade Point Average (GPA) and Rank in Class (RIC) system. The new policy will take effect for incoming 2011-2012 freshmen students.
Under the new policy, students' GPAs will be calculated for all courses taken for state credit. This includes courses such as football, band, art, choir, and engineering. This inclusive GPA will be beneficial to more than 80% of students. The Rank in Class will be an internal data point, only used to calculate the top 10% of each graduating class. RIC will be calculated for only courses taken in the five core areas: English/Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Languages Other Than English (LOTE). GPA and RIC will include weighted courses using the current four level, 6.0 scale. Elective courses will no longer affect a student's class ranking.
The Board withheld final approval of the policy until January, pending review by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB).
