IBM and Coppell ISD have come together again for the 4th year of Girls Inspired Greatly About the World of Technology (GIGA WOT) camp. This is a highly successful event designed for 7th grade girls to interest them in science, math and technology. The weeklong camp takes place at the IBM sales center in Coppell.
According to research, girls lose interest in math and science in their middle school years. This camp is dedicated to keeping these subjects significant to girls through a completely interactive community filled with experiments, educational games, and exciting projects. The girls also get to spend time testing mixtures and discussing their findings with the company’s top scientist.
Camp GIGA WOT Co-Chair, Jo Ann Hill, said, "This year's camp included a very energetic group of girls excited about learning and they demonstrated tremendous growth during the week as they took advantage of the opportunity to use their creativity for solving technical problems.”
Recently, IBM awarded CISD with a catalyst grant for $10,000. This money will be spent on generating the interest of middle school girls in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) academy by providing exciting opportunities at camp GIGAWOT, infusing more girl related interests in curriculum, and bringing in top female speakers and scientist to show girls that they can be successful in the science field!
