Coppell ISD Boundaries Expand to Include the City of Coppell
The Coppell ISD Board of Trustees recently approved Open Enrollment, for the admission of elementary students who live within the City of Coppell, but outside the attendance boundaries of CISD (an area which includes, but is not limited to, Coppell Greens and Riverchase). Residents in these neighborhoods have lobbied CISD for years to consider allowing their children to attend the schools in the community in which they reside. The move was approved by the Board on a one-year trial basis beginning fall 2011 for a few elementary schools with declining student enrollments.
This change in the district's policy will create greater efficiency of operations by allowing the campuses to maximize their enrollment capacity in buildings that are already being heated, cooled, and cleaned. This could also save a few teaching positions and generate between $300,000 and $500,000 in additional revenue for the district (depending on where the legislature sets CISD's target revenue and the number of students who apply). Early enrollment projections for Cottonwood Creek Elementary indicate a nearly 100 student decline for next year – a trend in the northwestern quadrant of the school district as movement has stabilized over the past few years. Two additional campuses, Denton Creek and Town Center Elementary, also located to the north, are experiencing a similar trend and may also be included in next year's Open Enrollment process depending on their final enrollment numbers. If more students apply than there are seats available, CISD will employ the use of a lottery system to reach capacity.
Coppell ISD will not charge tuition and parents must provide their own transportation if their student is accepted to participate in the Open Enrollment process. Students will be required to reapply for an open seat every year should the Board grant an extension beyond the first year. Applications, policy changes, process criteria, and a Frequently Asked Question page will be available online at coppellisd.com by May 11 or in hard copy at the Vonita White Administration Building located at 200 South Denton Tap Road, Coppell, Texas, 75019, during regular business hours. Applications will be accepted in-person, at the same location, during regular business hours beginning May 16th through June 9th.
