Bastrop ISD Relief Efforts Underway
The recent Bastrop County fires have had a major impact on staff, students, and the community. According to the school public relations office in Austin, more than 200 Bastrop ISD staff and faculty have lost homes or suffered devastation. More than 1500 homes in the area have been destroyed displacing some 450-500 students.
While one of the middle schools was initially used as a shelter, schools reopened on Monday, September 12, and FEMA is providing hotel rooms for those affected. Attendance has held remarkably steady, having only dropped by about 2% from the previous weeks.
Donald Williams, Executive Director of Communications/Community Services, says clothing and monetary assistance are a priority at this time. Gift cards (esp. to restaurants) are also being requested.
Monetary donations can be made to the BISD Employee Relief Fund at the First National Bank, PO Drawer F, Bastrop, Texas, 78602. The account number is 18-570-2.
Clothing donations are being received at Bastrop High School, West Campus, located at 1602 Hill Street, Bastrop, Texas, 78602.
