• Elementary Art Educators In The Spotlight

Arstonia, the world's largest online kid's art museum recently announced this year's leading Arts Education programs in the state and seven of Coppell Independent School District's elementary campuses received accolades. Among the Top 10 programs in Texas and coming in at number six was Cottonwood Creek Elementary, under the art direction of Lynda Harris, followed by Mockingbird Elementary at number eight with Terese Kitts at the helm of their art program. Marilyn Mohr and her students at Wilson Elementary ranked number nine, and Valley Ranch Elementary, under the direction of Jennifer Torres, completed the top ten list.

These art teachers were recognized with Artsonia's Leadership Award for encouraging family and community involvement in Arts Education. The award also recognizes significant achievement in the area of technology integration within the school arts program. State rankings were based on specific criteria which demonstrate both aspects of the Leadership Award.

Teachers representing more than 100 countries showcase their student's artwork on Artsonia. The number of pieces of artwork showcased, the number of times the art collection is visited, and the number of comments received by family and friends were among the criteria that factored-in to the recognition. Artsonia donates fifteen percent of the annual revenue raised from art keepsakes, purchased by family members, back to the school's art program. Cottonwood Creek Elementary art teacher Lynda Harris said, “Participation in this opportunity has proven to be one of the best ways we can keep the importance of art education in front of our community. My students get an international, online venue for showcasing their artistic talents, recognition is given to our program, and our school makes money. It's a win-win!”

Other CISD elementary campuses recognized were Lakeside, under the direction of Cacey Nanez, Town Center and their art teacher Beth Dilley, and Austin artists under the direction of Lisa Ricciardelli. Visit www.artsonia.com/schools to view student artworks from all participating Coppell schools.
