Huge Science Accolades for CMSW Student
Rohan Panaparambil was recently selected as a semifinalist in the 2011 Broadcom MASTERS, a program for Science & the Public. This honor places him among a select group of 300 semifinalists named from over 6,000 nominees throughout the United States. Rohan was an eighth grader at Coppell Middle School West this year and named his seventh grade science teacher, Cathy Douglas, as the teacher who inspired and assisted him with his science fair project entitled, “Bioplastic 2.0” (in the Environmental Science category) which won First Place in the State Science Fair competition last spring.
According to Rohan, “Mrs. Douglas helped me at the CMSWest science competition in the district and was there for me when I went to regionals. When I went to state, she stayed all day long waiting with me and the other students and our parents until we heard back from all the judges. To me, she represented not only the support of Coppell Middle School West, but of the whole district.”
The feeling is mutual for Mrs. Douglas, “Rohan is a very special student. He is not only strong in the classroom, he is also a talented musician and a genuinely nice person. I knew his project would stand a good chance at being successful because of 1) its potential to affect people/society (global impact), 2) the down economy, and 3) use of abundant waste for efficiency…all qualities the judges like to see. Mrs. Douglas described the judging pool as one that looks for projects that will help solve real world problems and included engineers, environmentalists, computer scientists, etc. from government (i.e. the Environmental Protection Agency, the Army, Navy, and Air Force) and private industry such as Raytheon and believes Rohan has a very good chance to become one of the elite thirty finalists in the country.
The next step in the Broadcom MASTERS takes place on August 31, when 30 finalists will be selected from the 300 semifinalists. Finalists and one parent or guardian will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC to attend the Broadcom MASTERS Finals from in late September/early October.
