How do you combine service and giving back to the community with “hands on” education? Learners from Victory Place @ Coppell (VP@C) found a unique way. With the invaluable guidance of Mr. Charles Hardin, a dedicated volunteer, these learners built customized sets of  corn hole toss games which they delivered to each of the Coppell Fire Stations.

At Victory Place @ Coppell there is an emphasis put on service and developing active members of a global community who see the value and need for serving others.  For the spring semester Compass learners at VP@C thought outside of the box and wanted to do something special for a group of Coppell’s public safety personnel.  Knowing that firefighters and paramedics spend 24 hour shifts away from their families as they keep the community safe,  these learners wanted to give something to the firefighters that could provide some relief during any down time they may have at the firehouses.  With that in mind, these learners, with guidance from Mrs. Lynne Ryan, VP@C Instructional Aide, decided to create, from scratch and with their hands, a set of cornhole games (including sewing the bean bags used in the games) and gave a set to each station.

Starting the project with sheets of plywood and 2X4’s, the learners carefully and cooperatively used saws, hammers, routers and drills to  transform the raw wood into corn hole games. Once constructed, the learners used paint, decals and wax to personalized them.  On Friday March 10th, the learners visited the different fire stations to drop off the cornhole games.  The firefighters at each station were filled with appreciation and gratitude at thoughtful gifts, especially given the amount of hours and hard work that went into their creation.  Learners and Educators were treated to tours of the firehouses as well as different firetrucks and equipment. The entire campus of  Victory Place @ Coppell appreciates the dedication and commitment of the Coppell Fire Department and how its dedicated men and women serve the community.
