City P&Z Commission Approves CMSE Athletic Field Zoning Request

The City of Coppell Planning and Zoning Commission approved Coppell ISD’s rezoning request for the district’s planned renovations to the Coppell Middle School East Athletic Field at its Jan. 18 public hearing. The zoning change request now will go to the Coppell City Council for final approval, which will be on the agenda at its Feb. 13 meeting.

CISD asked the City of Coppell Planning & Zoning Commission to change the zoning of CMS East from SF-12 (Single Family-12) to PD-292-SD-12 (Planned Development 292-SF-12) to allow for renovations of the CMS East Athletic Field, which includes a parking lot expansion between CMS East and Mockingbird Elementary; the addition of 300-seat bleachers and press box with a small sound system; a concession/restroom facility; and field lighting.

As a condition of receiving the zoning change, CISD will not have an Interlocal Agreement for use of the CMS East Athletic Field with the City of Coppell. CISD announced Jan. 18 that it was no longer pursuing an Interlocal Agreement, after receiving input from the community and having further discussion with the City.

CISD expects construction on the project to begin in March or April and be complete when school starts in August 2018. Construction of the concession/bathroom facility will occur when CMS East building renovations begin in 2019. All CMS East renovation projects are part of the district’s voter approved 2016 Bond.
