Dear Class of 2020 Students and Families,

From the beginning of this school closure, Coppell ISD has made a commitment to our seniors to do everything we could to make the ending of your senior year as meaningful as possible.  Our goal has been to provide our seniors with as many celebratory events as we could. Specifically, related to graduation, we have shared that we would continue to explore an in-person ceremony, in addition to the virtual graduation ceremonies announced earlier this spring.

We are providing virtual ceremonies because of the school closure due to COVID-19, the social distancing restrictions declared by Dallas County and the City of Coppell, our prior venues not allowing our previously scheduled ceremonies, and, perhaps most importantly, we were told by some seniors and their families that they would not participate in any type of in-person ceremony because they did not feel comfortable.  We are committed to providing a ceremony for all seniors and a safe way for all of our families to celebrate our graduates.

Our virtual ceremonies will be broadcast on CISD’s YouTube Channel and you can find the link and more details at www.coppellisd.com/graduation with New Tech High @ Coppell’s ceremony shared live starting at 5 p.m., Friday May 22, and Coppell High School’s ceremony shared live starting at 1 p.m., Thursday May 28.

We also are excited to announce that, in addition to the virtual graduation ceremonies, we have secured a spot at the new Globe Life Field in Arlington for an in-person graduation ceremony.  We were hoping to be able to use one of our own facilities, but because of the restrictions in Dallas County, we have not been able to make that happen.  We are also working with the additional guidance and directives provided by the Texas Education Agency Commissioner of Education Mike Morath in his Guidance for Graduation and End-of-Year Promotion Ceremonies issued on Tuesday, May 5.

On Sunday, May 31, both Coppell ISD high schools will have an in-person graduation ceremony at the new Globe Life Field (Texas Rangers Baseball Stadium) in Arlington. The number of guests will be limited and focused on our senior graduates and their immediate family.  These ceremonies are not open to the public.  More details will be forthcoming.

Please note that this ceremony is optional.  We want to provide options for our seniors and their families.  Therefore, we have both the virtual and in-person graduation ceremonies for our seniors and families. As a reminder, graduation from high school is not contingent upon participating in either graduation event.  Again, this in-person ceremony is optional for our seniors and their families to participate.

The safety of our seniors, their families and our staff is of the utmost importance, so there will be very specific guidelines and restrictions from the venue, the Texas Education Agency and Tarrant County that we all will be required to follow. We will send separate instructions to our seniors and their families detailing these requirements and other information about the in-person graduation ceremony soon. For now, please mark your calendars for Sunday, May 31:

  • 5:30 p.m. —  New Tech High @ Coppell
  • 8:30 p.m.  —  Coppell High School

To our wonderful Senior Class of 2020, I want to personally thank you for your patience, tenacity and grit,  as we continue to work through this school closure together as a CISD family.  This has not been easy for any of us, and I am happy we will have something special for our seniors to be able to celebrate their last year in CISD together with their class and their families.

Thank you,

Dr. Brad Hunt
Superintendent
