Message from the Superintendent: COVID-19 Protocols and Temporary Virtual Learning

August 10, 2021

Dear CISD Families,

It’s an exciting time as we plan for the start of the new school year, but I know for some  of you, this is also a time of concern. I have heard from many of our families over the last few days sharing their input, concerns and requests for the new school year. I want to thank you for your patience and understanding, as we have been processing your feedback, reviewing our COVID-19 protocols, examining our options and re-evaluating our virtual learning plans.

Today, I am sharing with you our updated COVID-19 protocols, as well as announcing CISD will be offering a Temporary Virtual Learning option for Early Childhood/Pre-K to 6th grade students. Our elementary and 6th grade families will receive a separate email message about the Temporary Virtual Learning option, which does require a commitment by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, August 12.

As we make these announcements, it is with the caveat that COVID-19 remains a fluid situation, and adjustments may still be necessary based on how the situation continues to evolve, directives from the state and other circumstances. I also understand that there will be some who think we haven’t gone far enough, and others who think we have gone too far in making these decisions. I am fully aware we are not able to please everyone. However, I assure you that our teams are working around the clock to do what we believe is best for the students we serve and to provide a high quality education in a safe learning environment.

Regardless of your views, this is a time for us to come together as a community to get the school year off to a successful start.. It is not helpful or productive to attack each other in emails or on social media. Our children are watching us and take their cues from how they see the adults in their lives act. Let us all work together as a CISD family to continue to do what we do best, which is provide an exceptional learning experience for all students.

Updated COVID-19 Protocols
Our updated COVID-19 protocols are now online on our Parent Hub page at or can be accessed directly at These protocols are also attached to this email. Many of these COVID-19 protocols are the same ones we used so successfully last year.

Since this is an ever-changing situation, we anticipate there may be additional COVID-19 protocol updates based on possible announcements or updates from the state. As such, the district is continuing to monitor the pandemic and may adjust these protocols to continue to ensure the safety of our students and staff, while complying with the legal parameters the district must follow. Please continue to check your emails and the CISD website for these updates.

As part of our updated protocols, CISD has developed a COVID-19 dashboard, at The district will begin updating the dashboard starting on the first day of in-person school on Tuesday, August 17. Our goal is to continue to keep our parents and staff informed regarding positive cases across the district and by campus and grade level.

Regarding masks, the Governor’s Executive Order gives the right to individuals to choose whether to wear a mask, and we encourage you to exercise that right.  Many of our staff will be wearing masks, and we ask you to respect their decision, as well as those of our students.

Temporary Virtual Learning Option
CISD will be offering a Temporary Virtual Learning option to begin the 2021-2022 school year for students in grades Early Childhood/Pre-K to 6 from August 23 to October 7, 2021. Students whose parents choose the virtual classroom option will begin the school year on Monday, August 23, to allow for additional planning time for online instruction.

Parents of all enrolled CISD students in grades Early Childhood/Pre-K to 6th grade will receive a separate email message with a link and instructions to enroll in the temporary virtual learning option, if they choose. The window to choose the Temporary Virtual Learning option ends at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, August 12.

This temporary virtual learning environment will allow students to engage in at-home learning virtually using CISD instructional resources in pre-kindergarten through 6th grade, ages where COVID-19 vaccinations are not yet available. Again, this temporary virtual option will be available through the first nine weeks of school. However, this will be reevaluated and may be extended as necessary.  We believe strongly that in-person learning provides our students with the best educational experience, but given the present situation and high demand from our parents, we wanted to provide this option to our families at this time.

You can continue to reach out to us at We are receiving a high volume of emails right now, which is causing a delay in response. I assure you that we are reading every email.

Thank you for your commitment to our kids and this district. We appreciate you and look forward to a great school year.
