Safety Message Concerning CMS East Students Approached by Stranger After-School

Dear CMS East  and Mockingbird Families,

We want you to be aware that the Coppell Police Department is investigating a situation that occurred on Mockingbird Lane. We were made aware today that on Wednesday, May 15, at about 3:35 p.m. after school, a female CMS East student was walking home on Mockingbird and was approached by a male.  She said the unknown man told her he was a friend of her father, grabbed her arm and told her to come with him. This student pushed him away and ran away, and she is safe. She describes the man as a 50 to 60-year-old white male, approximately 6 feet tall and with short grey hair.  He was not near a vehicle. The student was able to escape the situation and reported the incident to the Coppell Police Department, which shared it with school officials.

While the police investigate this incident, I assure you that CMS East and Mockingbird are working closely with our staff, our school resource officer, and the Coppell Police Department to ensure our students remain safe. There will be extra police presence in the neighborhood around our school at the time of dismissal this afternoon, and staff will be keeping a close watch around our buildings.

Parents and guardians, you also may want to remind your children about basic safety precautions when it comes to strangers. It is always a good idea to avoid walking alone, and children should never go with or get into the vehicle of someone they don’t know. If approached or asked to get into a vehicle by a stranger, children should run away in the opposite direction the vehicle is facing and immediately tell a trusted adult.

There are a number of good resources online for parents wanting to talk with their children about stranger safety. One such resource can be found at:

Please know that CMS East and Mockingbird are committed to working with our families and law enforcement to ensure the safety of our children. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
