Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia Found on Wilson Playground
Dear Wilson Families,
I want to make you aware that during recess today (May 21), two of our students found marijuana and drug paraphernalia on the playground. These students immediately told a teacher, who collected the items and then told administration. We contacted the Coppell Police Department, which is investigating the incident. It appears that these items were left on our playground after-school hours.
As concerning as this news may be, I want to commend the students for doing the right thing and telling a trusted adult, in this case a teacher. I also applaud our staff for their calm and measured response to this situation, as their first priority was our children who discovered these items. As we head into the summer break, I know that many of our students will be spending time outdoors and may encounter items such as the ones found today, or others. They need to know to never pick up anything if they don’t know what it is and to tell a trusted adult when situations like this occur.
There are a number of good resources online for parents wanting to talk with their children about drugs and drug safety, including recent Parent University videos from Coppell ISD: Emerging Alcohol + Drug Trends, Exploring the Myths of Alcohol, Drugs, and Vaping and Drugs and the Opioid Epidemic. In addition, our Parent Toolkit offers additional tips for talking with your kids about drugs, including this article https://www.parenttoolkit.com/health-and-wellness/conversation-starter/physical-health/tough-talks-how-to-talk-to-your-child-about-drugs-and-alcohol.
Please know that we at Wilson are committed to working with our families and law enforcement to ensure the safety of our children. If you have any questions or concerns about this situation, please do not hesitate to contact me.
