Message From the Superintendent: TEA Releases District and Schools A-F Grades

Dear Coppell ISD Families,

The start of our 2019-2020 school year is cause for much celebration, as we welcomed almost 13,000 students to their first day of school, opened Canyon Ranch Elementary, showcased the renovations at CMS East, CMS North and Coppell High School, and plan to commemorate our district’s 60th birthday all school year long. 

Therefore, the news today that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has announced its “A-F grades” for all Texas school districts and Texas schools should not take away from our collective back-to-school excitement and our focus on student learning.  We believe in the "whole child" in Coppell ISD, putting a major emphasis on social emotional learning, character development and service to others, alongside academic growth.  We often tell our students that they are more than one day and one test. This same philosophy also applies to our district, as these “grades” are tied primarily to state standardized test scores. I firmly believe that CISD and our schools are more than just one day and one “grade” from the TEA. 

Though, Coppell ISD received an “A” overall, and our schools either received an “A” or “B,” we know that these TEA “grades” are just one small measure of our success.  Based mostly on student performance on the high-stakes, multiple choice state STAAR tests, these “grades” should not be the only measure of our district’s or our schools’ success. We at CISD continue to focus on a growth mindset, as we live out our Redefining Success value statement of, “We value each individual’s contribution because success can be different for everyone.”  

One crucial measure of our students’ success, no matter their performance level, is to grow and improve each day. Assisting us in this process is our expansion of our internal assessments to measure this growth beyond statewide testing by using tools, such as the PSAT and the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), to measure success at the national and international levels.  

Over the past year, you may have heard district and school leadership, Board of Trustees, and me share our preference for a comprehensive, community-based accountability system. We strongly believe that a community-based accountability system aligns with our four Core Values of Redefining Success, Great Teaching, Engagement and Relationships. This community-based accountability system could not only include academic indicators, but also fine arts, athletics and community service.

Therefore, I look forward to sharing more with you this year about CISD’s leadership role with the Texas Public Accountability Consortium (TPAC) in implementing a community-based accountability system that allows our parents and guardians, community members and educators to identify meaningful measurements to evaluate the progress and success points unique to our district. These are: student learning and progress; student readiness for the next level of education, career or military; engaged and well-rounded students; community engagement and partnerships; professional learning and the quality of staff; the safety and well-being of students;  and fiscal and operating systems.
