PE + Music + Art = Drum Fit at Pinkerton Elementary

As the saying goes, “If you can’t beat them, join them.” Third graders at Pinkerton Elementary have the opportunity to both, as they keep the beat and join together in drumming via the Drum Fit program, which combines the physical education, music and art specials at the school.

The Pinkerton PTO purchased the Drum Fit program a few years ago. Drum Fit is a non-competitive program that allows everyone to work together no matter the skill level allowing for success for all participants.

“Drum Fit incorporates rhythm, music, balance and creativity,” says Pinkerton Physical Education Teacher Colleen Michaelis. ”It also aligns with our physical education standards and state educational standards.

Joining Michaelis in this collaboration are Pinkerton Music Teacher Jennifer Jones and Art Teacher Kristin Huckle. According to Michaelis, Drum Fit promotes physical literacy, social and emotional learning, focus and fitness for learners of all age groups.

“It's super fun and the kids are always so engaged, plus it’s quite a workout,” she says. “My favorite part is watching how much fun the kids have while following Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Huckle, or when making up their own routines.”

Huckle says, “My favorite part is seeing how every learner is engaged and proud of themselves. It’s truly a team spirit moment and Mrs. Jones and Ms. Michaelis do an amazing job making it both fun and organized.”

She adds,“We also get to listen to some awesome music. It is truly so much fun and when we are doing it, it’s always the best part of my day.”

Third graders at Pinkerton will be performing their Drum Fit routine at the school’s Spirit Assembly later this month.

“The students are super excited about this performance, and so are the educators,” Michaelis says. “This will be a treat for the performers and the audience.”
