Living Out Our Core Values Via SELebration at Cottonwood Creek
Cottonwood Creek Elementary is living out the CISD core values of relationships, engagement and great teaching with the school’s monthly “SELebration” events. These activities focus on meeting the social and emotional learning (SEL) needs of teachers and staff.
“We know we cannot have our educators and staff take care of children, if they are not taking care of themselves,” says Cottonwood Creek Principal Dr. Andra Penny.
Each month, Cottonwood Creek Staff come together after school for a SELebration event. On Oct. 13, Championship Martial Arts in Coppell was part of the school’s October SELebration and provided a self defense classes for teachers and staff. In November, the school will play yard games together.
“We have the best teachers in the world,” Dr. Penny said. “It is important that we take care of them, so they can continue to educate our learners at the highest levels.”
The SELebration activities are a result of the CISD Strategic Design Advocate process. Cottonwood Creek’s Advocate for 2020-2021 Krixia Funa and Advocate for 2021-2022 Dorian Johnson collaborated with Dr. Penny developed this concept during their ongoing Strategic Design Advocacy meetings.
Administrators and select teachers and staff from CISD campuses and departments serve as Strategic Design Advocates each year. Advocates come together several times a school year to brainstorm, collaborate, develop and implement ideas that live out the district’s Strategic Design process and core values of authentic relationships, collective engagement, great teaching and redefining success.
