Middle School Transfer and Registration Information for DLI 5th Graders

Dear Parents and Guardians of 5th grade Dual Language Immersion Learners,

It is middle school course registration season, and we want to share important transfer reminders and middle school course information with you.

Though Coppell ISD does not offer a middle school Dual Language Immersion program, we want to continue to support and provide options for our learners to continue to grow and strengthen their Spanish language acquisition and global competency skills as Advanced Spanish Learners.  If your child wants to continue as an Advanced Spanish Learner at CMS North for 6th grade and is not zoned to that campus, you must fill out a transfer request form in the first transfer application window, no exceptions. You also will have to fill out a transfer request each year to remain at CMS North. *Please note that your child will be required to enroll in the Advanced Spanish courses. If your child is zoned to CMS North, and you wish to continue as an Advanced Spanish Learner, please select Honors Spanish II as a course for 2020-2021. No other action is required.

To verify your home/zoned middle school, visit www.coppellisd.com/enrollment and check your address.

Transfer request forms will be available at www.coppellisd.com/transfer starting March 16. The first transfer application window closes on April 24, 2020, and parents will be notified if their transfer request was accepted on or after May 22, 2020.

We understand that the transfer application window is after the deadlines to enter your course registration requests into the Home Access Center (HAC), which will show your child’s home/zoned campus for 2020-2021. As such, you will be unable to request an Advanced Spanish Learner course as an option in HAC for the 2020-2021 school year. This does not mean that you will not be able to enroll in an Advanced Spanish course after your transfer to CMS North is complete.

Please know, pursuing Advanced Spanish Learning at CMS North meets one of our criteria to be approved for a transfer.  Additional attendance, grade, and behavior criteria can be found in our transfer guidelines at www.coppellisd.com/Page/13224. Once the transfer application is filled out indicating a former DLI student pursuing Advanced Spanish Learning and approved, it will be shared with your child’s appropriate school counselor.  This counselor will adjust your child's schedule accordingly to ensure enrollment in the appropriate Advanced Spanish class, which is a condition of the transfer.  If your child wishes to participate in Band, they will be fitted for an instrument at their home zoned campus and that information will be shared if/once a transfer is approved.

As a reminder, current 5th graders enrolled in DLI at Denton Creek Elementary or Wilson Elementary, who wish to continue studying Spanish in middle school, should register for Honors Spanish II for the 2020-2021 school year. This course will only be available at Coppell Middle School North.  Those who will be transferring and don’t have that course as an option in the Home Access Center will be automatically enrolled in Honors Spanish II once their transfer application is approved.
