Coppell Middle School West is engaging in a school-wide Challenge Based Learning (CBL) capstone project to support Choir Teacher Allison Hartzell, who is battling cancer. CMS West’s year-long "Big Idea" has been around the idea of "Transformation.” For this project , students have created an essential challenge question which is, ”How can we use of the power of media to support #Run4Allison and transform a life?”
West students created a challenge for themselves based off this question. With the educators’ help, these students engage in “guiding activities” and “guiding questions” in order to learn more about how to solve the challenge, as well as more about the details surrounding the situation and the obstacles they may face. Then, the students implement solutions to answer the essential challenge question in a practical matter and document their learning process.
This CBL, which launched April 16, already has yielded successful media results as CBS 11 ran a story April 17 on the project. A copy of the CBS 11 story is available at http://dfw.cbslocal.com/video/category/news/3847684-community-raises-money-for-beloved-teacher-with-cancer/.
