Library and Information Services

School Librarians serve as active partners in the teaching and learning process by collaborating with educators to develop meaningful learning experiences through the integration of both content and information literacy TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). Coppell ISD libraries promote a love of reading and literature by ensuring all students are able to freely choose age-appropriate materials of interest in their campus library.

Instructional Design

  • Inquiry provides a framework for learning. Students are taught to locate, select, evaluate and use information appropriately and effectively. 

  • Reading is a foundational skill for learning, personal growth and enjoyment. It is encouraged at all grade levels through various promotional and instructional activities designed to develop successful readers.

  • Library users employ technology to locate materials and information, circulate items, collaborate with each other and create products. Librarians provide leadership and training for all learners in the use of current and emerging technologies.

  • The library collection is varied, balanced and current. It features information in multiple formats for all needs and interests, supports the curriculum and is appealing to library users.

  • The library is flexibly scheduled so that learners may use the library independently and at point of need.


Highlights

  • School Library Programs: Standards and Guidelines for Texas. The State of Texas establishes guidelines for school library programs at four levels: exemplary, recognized, acceptable, and below standard. Coppell ISD libraries’ overall rating is Recognized.

  • American Association of School Librarians, Standards for the 21st-Century Learner and Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Programs provides a framework for library teaching and learning based on the common beliefs that: 

    • Reading is a window to the world.

    • Inquiry provides a framework for learning.

    • Ethical behavior in the use of information must be taught.

    • Technology skills are crucial for future employment needs.

    • Equitable access is a key component for education.
