Social studies is an integrated curriculum which increases students' understanding of their role as a citizen in the community, state, nation, and world. Students acquire and use critical thinking skills to understand the diversity necessary to thrive in an interdependent world. Therefore, students will think creatively and reflect about the past to connect to the present in order to solve recurring and future problems. As a result of their social studies education, they are prepared to be active citizens in a democratic society.

Guiding Principles

The social studies curriculum of Coppell ISD reflects the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and has been developed around the following guiding principles:

1. Social studies integrates the strands of history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, culture, science-technology-and society, and social studies skills into a comprehensive, coherent, and cohesive curriculum.

2. Social studies equips students to understand and participate in the world around them.

3. Social studies instruction is relevant and meaningful to students utilizing a variety of learning strategies and experiential opportunities.

4. Social studies instruction fosters cultural literacy and produces an educated citizenry.

5. Social studies vertical and horizontal alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment eliminates gaps and repetitions in order to deepen student understanding of concepts.
