Attendance Matters...You Matter!

Student success is tied to regular attendance. When students are absent, they miss opportunities to learn and develop skills to become good citizens. Coppell ISD encourages students to attend school every day and be on time.

When a student misses school...

2 days a month
They miss 20 days each year...30 hours of math each year...40 hours of reading and writing each year...1.5 years of instruction by graduation

4 days a month
They miss 40 days each year...60 hours of math each year...80 hours of reading and writing each year...3 years of instruction by graduation

DID YOU KNOW?

State withholds funding to Coppell ISD for each day the student is absent from school.

Please keep this in mind when making doctor appointments and planning vacations. Help CISD maximize its available state funding with regular attendance.

How to Report an Absence:

Please be advised of the Coppell ISD attendance policy:

For all absences:

  • Send a note with your child to school within 3 days of their return. Make sure to include your child's first and last name, ID Number, dates absent, and an explanation of the reason for the absence.  Email absence letters to the campus attendance clerk.

  • If a note is not provided, the absence will be marked unexcused.

Doctor’s Appointments:

  • Please bring a doctor’s note when returning from the office visit, not just a handwritten parent note. Medical notes from parents that are also the attending physician will equate to a parent note, not a physician note.

Doctor’s Appointments when Ill:

  • Doctor’s notes are accepted in lieu of a parent note for the date indicated.  An additional parent note will be required for any days not covered by the medical note.

  • Absences of 5 or more consecutive school days because of illness will require a note from a medical professional to continue to mark absences as excused.

Extended Absences:

  • Please request approval from the Assistant Principal and notify the teacher(s).

  • Please provide a note or email after the absence with your child's first and last name, dates absent, and an explanation of the reason for the absence.

  • Learner will be responsible for making up work when he/she returns, but does not have to be provided prior to the leave.

  • Truancy may be filed on a student's 10th unexcused absence.

Religious Holiday:

  • Please send a handwritten note which indicates the specific date of the religious holiday within 3 days of their return.

    • If travel is required, please include the travel dates, and clearly indicate they are travel days.

  • The learner will be responsible for making up work when he/she returns.

  • If a note is not provided, the absence will be marked unexcused.

Please be aware that phone calls are not accepted as documentation for absences. Parents are welcome to give a courtesy call to the attendance clerk to report an absence, but a note will be required upon the student’s return to school.
