This week, Austin Elementary third graders took math practice into the end zone with a fun, football-themed review day as they prepared for an upcoming assessment. Dressed in jerseys and sports shirts, students huddled up to tackle one- and two-step addition and subtraction problems with numbers up to 1,000. They practiced using pictorial models, number lines and equations, listened to story problems and worked on estimating with compatible numbers. By applying place-value strategies, properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction, these young mathematicians put their skills into play and scored a touchdown for learning.
