Three children stand beside a blue classroom counting chart as one child places a yellow number card on it. A sign reads, “I can count to 120 using expanded form.”

First graders at Town Center Elementary are building their math skills as they solve and explain addition and subtraction problems using real-world objects, pictures and number sentences. Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, students are exploring how to join, separate and compare groups, find missing parts and compose numbers in different ways. Beyond finding the correct answer, these young mathematicians are learning to explain their thinking, share their problem-solving strategies and demonstrate why their approaches work, building a strong foundation for mathematical reasoning and confidence.
