AUSTIN ELEMENTARY

Writing was in action this week across several grade levels at Mockingbird Elementary, as students build foundational skills that will help them become confident communicators. Third graders participated in writing workshops focused on Writing Narratives, developing a clear personal narrative with an engaging lead, chronological details and a distinct conclusion, which are the core foundational expectations for third-grade writing. Students are learning to organize their ideas and craft stories that communicate a focused experience from beginning to end. First graders are building their writing foundations, too, practicing how to sound out words, determine which words need capitalization and which do not, and apply those skills to their own writing. Using whiteboards and sharing their work with classmates, students are practicing, receiving feedback and learning from one another. Together, these learning experiences show how elementary students develop writing skills step by step, from putting sounds and words on the page to crafting organized, engaging narratives.
