Saanvi Kamerkar, who recently completed fifth grade at Canyon Ranch Elementary and serves as a first-year member of the 2025–2026 Lone Star Leadership Academy Alumni Council, is making a difference in her community through her service project, The Smart Snacking Initiative for Ducks. The Lone Star Leadership Academy Alumni Council is a statewide program that brings together outstanding student leaders from across Texas to develop leadership skills while serving their schools and communities through meaningful projects and initiatives. As one of 128 student leaders selected to participate, Kamerkar planned and led her project with support from her sister, creating and distributing informational posters, handouts and pre-made duck food to educate community members about proper duck feeding practices. The effort resulted in twelve bags of duck food being distributed while helping community members learn how to safely feed ducks and prevent health issues such as angel wing caused by improper feeding. Reflecting on the experience, Kamerkar shared, “Solving problems in my community felt good.” Sponsored by Canyon Ranch Elementary School Nurse Wendy Acker, the project serves as an inspiring example of student leadership in action and the positive impact students can make in their communities.
