GPA & Class Rank

Please note that in 2025 the Texas Legislature mandates that TEA (Texas Education Agency) establish a standardized weighted GPA system for public high schools. As of January 2026, it has not been updated yet. Once we have more information we will update this page.

5.0 GPA Scale

The New Tech High @ Coppell grade point average (GPA) is on a weighted 5.0 grade point scale. Grade points are assigned to each semester grade as follows. Any semester grade below a 70 is averaged into a learner’s GPA with “0” grade points.

Grades

Level 4

Eligible Advanced Place (AP), some International Baccalaureate (IB), and other designated courses shall be categorized and weighted as Level IV courses

Level 3

Eligible honors courses, dual credit courses, some IB courses, and other designated courses shall be categorized and weighted as Level III courses

Level 2

All other eligible courses not categorized and weighted as Level II courses

Level 1

Eligible local credit courses shall be categorized and weighted as Level I courses

4.0 GPA Scale

Many colleges and universities request a 4.0 GPA on transcripts. We also include a weighted 4.0 Scale. Below is the conversion table for those grades.

Career and Technical Education courses will be assigned levels aligned with those indicated by TEA found on the Approved Statewide CTE Programs of Study with the following exceptions: eligible AP courses will be assigned level 4, courses indicated as level 1 according to TEA will be level 2 at NTHC, Statistics & Business Decision Making will be assigned level 2, and Honors Statistics & Business Decision Making will be assigned level 3.

In-Country transfer grades: Students who transfer into NTHC with letter grades on their official transcript will be given the equivalent lower end number grade as written in the table above.

Foreign transcripts will be recorded/transcribed on Coppell High School transcripts with the letter P for passing. No GPA will be awarded for the letter P (FD Local). Grades recorded on the official transcript (AAR) may not be removed or replaced.

CISD CLASS RANKING AND GPA POLICY for Class of 2025 and beyond

  • The § symbol is used to denote classes that count for RIC

  • New Tech High School ranks only the top 10% of the class.  

Calculation Schedule:

June:

  • GPA Update for all 10th & 11th graders, and recent graduates.

  • Class Rank Update for all 11th graders. Rank used for college admissions.

August/September

  • GPA update for all 11th & 12th graders including summer courses taken.

  • Please note rank will not be calculated at this time.

January

  • GPA update for all 10th, 11th & 12th graders to include all courses taken in first semester.

  • Class Rank Update for all 11th graders and 12th graders. 12th graders can use rank for college admissions.

Additional Information:

  • Students with 5 or more Pass/Fall grades transferred into their High School transcript will not be ranked.

  • Rank-in-Class GPA will be calculated based on the semester grades earned in specific high school credit courses, regardless of the grade in which they are taken. The included courses are listed in the next column.

Class of 2029 and beyond Class Rank

For class rank, starting with the class of 2029. All core English, math, science, social studies & foreign language classes count. *For DLI learners, Spanish II & Spanish III and beyond will be included in the calculation of class rank.

Courses will be denoted in the course guide with a "@" symbol.
