Coppell ISD Parent and Learner Guide to MAP
Purpose of MAP
MAP tests measure learner achievement in the general learning domains of reading, mathematics, and science. MAP scores help educators know what your child has mastered and what your child is ready to learn.
What to Expect from a MAP Test
Items on a MAP test are multiple choice. MAP tests are not timed, but plan for each to take about an hour. Some learners may need more time. MAP tests are not grade level dependent; the test content and the reporting scale are aligned to the appropriate learning sequence of concepts and skills. Therefore, your child will see content on this test that he/she has not learned yet. As a result, learners who complete the MAP test can be expected to accurately respond to approximately 50% of the questions. Please click on the following link to the “NWEA Family Toolkit” for more information about MAP: https://www.nwea.org/the-map-suite/family-toolkit/
MAP is designed independent of grade level so that we can measure learner achievement whether they are below, at, or above grade level. MAP will adapt to above and below grade level to find an appropriate level of challenge specific to each learner.
How will we use the MAP results?
Educators will be analyzing the results of the assessment to guide instructional decisions and next steps for your learner(s). Therefore, it is critical to get an accurate measurement of what your child is able to do independently. To that end, please provide your child with support and encouragement while they are testing. Please do not help your child answer any questions on the test. Remind your child that they will not know the answer to some questions, and that is okay.

Important Information for Learners Testing Remotely
Getting Started: MAP Testing with your CISD iPad: Step-by-Step Guide for Parents & Learners
Before Testing
The preferred device for MAP testing is a CISD-issued iPad. Prepare the device in advance for testing.
Make sure the CISD iPad is charged.
If your child is taking MAP in grades K or 1 or is receiving oral accommodations, you will need to ensure the audio is working correctly either through the device or headphones if the learner is using them. The second step practice website in Step 2 is a great way to check the audio on the device.
If a learner has testing accommodations, your educator has set up the test so that learners have access to the approved accommodations. If you notice that an accommodation is missing or not working, please contact your child’s educator via email.
Verify that your WiFi is working properly at home.
If you choose, explore the MAP warm-up items to familiarize your learner with what they may see on MAP.

Make sure that the learner has access to any accommodations that they need and have been approved by the school/district. Your educator will let you know if your child will need to access any accommodations while testing.
Work with your child(ren) to develop a plan on how to minimize distractions that could occur during the test.
Reassure your child(ren) that you are there to provide support, but that you will not be able to help them answer questions on the test.
Reassure your child(ren) that they are not expected to answer every question correctly. This is not the kind of assessment where you are expected to know the answer to each question.
During Testing
Open your CISD issued iPad.
From your child(ren)’s Schoology course, click on the NWEA testing website link.
Enter the test session name and password provided by your educator.
If technical difficulties arise, contact your child’s educator via email.
Encourage your child(ren) to do their best and monitor them for signs they may need to take a break.
As a reminder, when your child encounters questions that they do not understand, simply encourage them to select the answer they think might be correct and then move on. All learners will see content that they have not been taught. Every child who takes the MAP is expected to answer approximately 50% of the items correctly.
To maintain the security and validity of the test, you must not take photos, videos, or screenshots of any MAP test items or capture the items in any way.
Ending Testing
When your child has completed their test, help them shut down the MAP Growth assessment window.
Congratulate your child(ren) on working hard and trying their best.
Supporting Learners During Testing
While your child is taking this assessment, the educator will monitor the child’s progress. If you or your child(ren) experiences technical difficulties while completing the assessment, contact the educator via email.
How can I support my learner while he/she is testing?
DOs
Provide scratch paper for MAP math and science tests.
Provide a dictionary for learners completing any MAP test, if you choose.
Help your child(ren) type in the session name and password as well as selecting their name from the drop down menu.
Make sure the audio is working correctly on the CISD iPad for learners in kindergarten and first grade or those with oral accommodations.
Contact the educator for help with technical issues.
Support and encourage your child and reassure them when they encounter difficult items.
DON'Ts
Do not allow learners to use other devices or resources to try to solve problems on MAP. (Unless a specific Allowable Accommodation is provided by the educator.)
Do not help your child(ren) choose a specific answer.
Do not take photos, videos, or screenshots of any MAP test items.
