The Feb. 23 meeting of the Coppell Independent School District Board of Trustees opened with a celebration of excellence as Trustees recognized the district’s 2025-2026 Campus Teachers of the Year, honoring outstanding educators representing each CISD campus. The meeting also featured a public hearing on the Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR), presented by Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction Mary Kennington, who outlined district and campus academic performance data and highlighted areas of strength and growth.

Trustees also approved several key items that will shape the upcoming school year and continue progress on district initiatives. The Board adopted the 2026-2027 school calendar and approved submission of a Missed School Days Waiver to the Texas Education Agency for Jan. 28-29, 2026, when the district was closed due to winter weather. Extra, built-in instructional minutes were used for when the district was closed Jan. 26-27, 2026. Trustees also approved a resolution declaring a public purpose for the expenditure of public funds to pay employees during the district’s closure from Jan. 26-29, 2026.

A number of bond-related projects also received approval, continuing investments in facilities and infrastructure funded through the 2023 Bond program. Trustees approved the purchase of approximately $250,000 in tools and equipment for the district’s maintenance and grounds departments; accepted completed additions and renovations at Valley Ranch Elementary by Core Construction; and authorized the replacement of 28 HVAC units at New Tech High @ Coppell at a cost of $385,116.12. The Board also approved concrete trip hazard repairs at 16 campuses by Aramark Facility Services for $278,963.24 and hired One Source Building Services for miscellaneous bond renovation projects, including ADA-compliant sidewalk additions, concrete replacement, safety fencing, irrigation replacement, parking lot striping and plumbing renovations, at a cost not to exceed $500,000.

Additional action and consent items included approval of TEA Staff Development Waivers for 2026-2027; a Good Cause Exception for Armed Security Staffing, as required under House Bill 121; adoption of the annual financial audit for the fiscal year ending Aug. 31, 2025; and approval of library materials recommended by the School Library Advisory Council. Trustees voted not to approve a resolution for a Period of Prayer and Reading of Religious Text.
